Scan from HP printers with no HP software
sane-airscan is a SANE backend (the Linux scanner framework) that scans over the network from printers speaking AirScan (eSCL) or WSD, so no HP Smart, HP account or HPLIP is needed. Scans go straight from the printer to scanning apps such as SimpleScan or scanimage.
Its README lists 59 HP devices it was tested with, across DeskJet, ENVY, OfficeJet Pro, Smart Tank, Neverstop and LaserJet MFPs. A few older LaserJet MFPs (M125, M127, M225) are listed as WSD only. USB-connected printers need the ipp-usb daemon alongside it.
Also works with Epson, Xerox, and Kyocera
