FirmwareRestore network control to an older Nest
No Longer Evil redirects an older Nest thermostat to a replacement server while retaining its existing thermostat software. Run its server on your own network to control temperature and modes from a web dashboard and connect it to Home Assistant, a home automation hub.
Flashing needs a Mac or Linux computer and a USB cable; the first generation also needs disassembly. The author calls the firmware experimental, and firmware-specific communication and flashing failures remain reported.
