Newer macOS on Macs Apple has dropped
OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) is a Python app that builds an OpenCore boot setup and installs patches, so Intel Macs that Apple no longer supports can run newer macOS. OpenCore is an open-source boot loader. The README says OCLP supports macOS Big Sur through Tahoe, and its model list covers Intel Macs from 2007 and 2008 up to 2020 models. It runs on the Mac itself and needs no account.
You need an installer for the macOS version you want and a USB drive or a spare disk. Apple silicon Macs are not supported, and the docs mark the 2018 MacBook Air (MacBookAir8,1) as unsupported because of T2 chip issues. The README says it is offered as-is, and its source notes warn that untagged nightly builds are untested.
