Shoot, list and copy photos from a terminal
gPhoto2 is the command line front end to libgphoto2, the library that talks to cameras over USB. It can list, download and delete files on a Canon camera, take a picture, change settings and capture live view. Nothing goes through a Canon account.
libgphoto2's camera table lists Canon models from the original 5D and 300D through the EOS R6 Mark III, including the EOS M series and many PowerShots. Which features work depends on the model, so check libgphoto2's support page before relying on one. The gPhoto2 documentation shows how to pipe the live view stream from gphoto2 --capture-movie through ffmpeg into a v4l2loopback device, a Linux driver that adds a virtual webcam, so video apps see the camera as a webcam.
You need a computer with libgphoto2 and a USB cable. Linux packages are common; on macOS the README documents a source build.
