FreshTomato
FirmwareOpen Tomato firmware for older Nighthawk AC routers
FreshTomato is an open-source replacement firmware for Broadcom routers, with a web interface that adds QoS, VPN clients and servers, bandwidth graphs and scripting. It runs on the router with no NETGEAR account or cloud. This is the ARM branch; it replaces NETGEAR's own firmware completely.
For NETGEAR, the project's README lists the AC1450, R6200v2, R6250, R6300v2, R6400, R6400v2, R6700v1, R6700v3, R6900, XR300, R7000, EX6200, EX7000, R7900 and R8000. The 2026.4 download folder has a build for each. No Wi-Fi 6, 6E or 7 Nighthawk and no Orbi is on the list.
NETGEAR models need FreshTomato's separate "Netgear initial files" image flashed first, and the project keeps "back to OFW" files for returning to the stock firmware. Check the exact model and hardware version before flashing, since R6400 v1, R6700 v1/v3 and R6900 builds differ. Older NETGEAR models on the project's MIPS branch (WNR3500L, WNDR3400, WNDR3700v3, WNDR4000) are covered by a separate repo.
